Getting Into Medical School Personal Statement (AMCAS statement)

Like many pre-medical students, I have always struggled with choosing a specialty for my upcoming fellowship. Of course I still have a fair amount of time before that comes to reality, but for me, it has always been a “flavor of the week” kind of decision. I would have some sort of experience or encounter with a certain specialty and it would sway me in one direction or another. But that was all about to change.

While in school gaining my bachelors degree, I studied under a professor that specialized in the effect of healthy environments on patients. This included everything from sustainable design to indoor air quality and the utilization of natural light and views. At first, it became a sort of hobby for me, almost a laughing matter, but intriguing just the same. It wasn’t until I experienced it first hand that the seriousness of it began to sink in. A dear friend’s grandmother was diagnosed with early onset dementia. She was admitted into our local hospital where the slow fade began. How I wished to fast forward in my career and be the doctor that could save her and reverse the effects of the devastating disease. But I was merely a student.

I never connected my studies of healthy healing environments with this instance until my friend’s grandmother was transported to a facility that specialized in this very thing. You should have seen the woman’s face when she realized that this was her new home. She was thrilled! The facility was absolutely beautiful; even I would have lived there, given the choice. So many of the principles that I had been studying were coming to life right before me. I couldn’t believe how valid they were. I found myself inclined more often to accompany my friend on his trips to the hospital. We all noticed immediately that her memory was beginning to improve. She never regained full function of it, but the process was most definitely slowed. I will never forget the day that she finally remembered her grandson’s name again. And she never forgot it for the rest of her time.

While a healthy, inspiring environment could not save my friend’s grandmother, it most certainly improved her quality of life and possibly even lengthened it. I am still unsure as to the exact specialty that I will begin my career in medicine with, but I do know that I want to continue to study of the effect of healthy environments on patients. I hope to one day discover breakthroughs that will save and improve lives forever. I firmly believe that your graduate program, set apart as it is, will be my next step to this achievement.
