Main Observership Application Requirements

What Is an Observership Program and Why Would You Want to Take Part?

An observership program allows you to join as a visitor and get to shadow a member of the current medical team in your chosen hospital. The reason for this is to acclimatize you to all of what happens within the hospital. This includes:

  • Observation of the interactions between physicians and patients
  • Observation of interactions between staff members
  • Observation of actual health care delivery
  • Observation of record keeping and other paperwork
  • Observation of how Americans talk with regards to slang and other euphemisms

The reasons for submitting an observership application is gain experience as to what it would be like to actually work within an American hospital. It is often seen as a helpful step when applying for a residency as many will accept someone they already have experience with on their residency programs, although this is certainly not guaranteed nor implied.

Observership Application Requirements

Every school and hospital has different requirements for their observership program and they also have different times at which they are allowed. Not every hospital and department has staff that are willing to supervise an observership. Charges also vary between hospitals but usually are $500 or less with a weekly allowance required also. The basic typical requirements are:

  • An application letter
  • Up to date Resume
  • Recommendation letter from your college / school
  • Confidentiality statement
  • Immunization form – each hospital will have a list of required immunizations
  • Copy of your degree and other qualifications – these are required in English and copies may have to be notarized
  • Your application fee – usually non-refundable

If you do not want to lose out on your chances of a place you need to do your homework very carefully and ensure that you follow the specific requirements of the hospital that you are sending your observership application to. You also need to ensure that the hospital actually covers the specific specialization that you are wishing to study.
